Woman says she found home intruder hiding behind boxes in her basement

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. – A Birmingham woman says she "screamed bloody murder" when she found a man hiding in her basement in the middle of the night.

"I was on a full-tilt run. I grabbed a kitchen knife and some keys," she told Local 4.

She ran to her car and drove to the police station.

It happened at 3:20 a.m. Oct. 26 on Hazel Street near Woodward Avenue. The woman, who did not want to be named in this story, said she was up late because her dog had been sick. She had let the dog out of a back door several times.

"I could have left the door unlocked and he (the man) could have walked right in," she said.

She was cleaning the upstairs of the home while looking after the dog. She went to the basement for supplies and saw the intruder sitting on the floor behind some boxes.

Police are looking for a white man in his late 30s with short, dark hair and dark glasses.

The woman believes he tried to say something, but she never heard it as she fled the house.

Nothing was taken, and the man never threatened her.

She said she added a security system the next day.

The woman allowed Local 4 to get some images of her basement.
