DETROIT – An original model that was used for the famous "Spirit of Detroit" sculpture is going up for auction.
Marshall M. Fredericks sculpted the 10 1/2-inch figure during the process of making the full-sized bronze version, which sits in front of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center off Woodward Avenue in the city's downtown area.

Fredericks worked on the 26-foot sculpture at a foundry in Norway for years before it was brought to Detroit and dedicated in 1958.
The Dumouchelle Auction House says the model version was left behind in Norway as a gift to Fredericks' family, but it will now be auctioned off on Sunday, Jan., 19.
According to the auction house's website, the model sculpture is estimated to go for $15,000 to $20,000.
The auction begins at noon at 409 East Jefferson Ave., Detroit. The auction will also feature another one of Fredericks' sculptures, "Baby Baboon."
