Michigan Coalition of Anti-Stalking seeks community support

No description found

There's an effort underway in Michigan to create a stalking registry.

The Michigan Coalition of Anti-Stalking (MCAS) and State Rep. Fred Durhal Jr. are sponsoring bills 5538 and 5539 -- which would create a public registry for anyone who is convicted of a stalking-related crime.

Harvette Williams, Founder of MCAS, personally dealt with the effects of being stalked, and decided to create a non-profit to share her story, and encourage others.

Since the founding of MCAS in 2006 Williams has done documentaries for E Network, The Discovery Channel, and Home TV. Williams is actively engaged in her community by holding an annual stalking awareness rally in January, and she has spoken at local churches, and colleges.

To push legislation, Williams wrote a bill that was signed into law in 2008 requiring convicted stalkers to wear a GPS monitor for 18 to 24 months.

"Stalking does not discriminate, and I want to continue to bring it to the forefront," Williams said.

Anyone who has been affected by stalking is encouraged to write a letter in support of the bills.
