CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A man and a woman are charged in connection to last week's deadly shooting of a party store owner in Clinton Township.
Owner Emil Salem was shot to death Thursday night during an attempted robbery at Bernie's Market on Garfield Road. Salem had exchanged gunfire with the would-be robber, who suffered injuries. There was a trail of blood outside leading to the back of the building where the getaway vehicle was parked, leading police to believe the robber was shot as well.
Police traced the shooter to Ohio, where he was being treated at a hospital in Findlay. Police say a woman drove him to the Ohio hospital.
The shooter is identified by police as 31-year-old Ujuan Burton, of Oak Park. Burton is charged with felony murder, armed robbery, felony firearm and felon in possession of a firearm. He is being released from the hospital in Toledo and transported back to Michigan.
Shardae Lynett Burt, 30, of Detroit, is charged with accessory to a felony after the fact. She is the woman accused of driving Burton to the hospital in Findlay.
Both are being held without bond.
Bernie's Market was robbed in January of this year, along with three other stores in the area.
