Adolph Mongo claims Detroit police mistreated him

DETROIT – Political strategist Adolph Mongo says he was the victim of a bullying Detroit cop during a traffic stop.

Mongo was pulled over on Jefferson Avenue in Detroit for blowing through a red light. It's what happened next that has Mongo crying police bullying. Chief James Craig is sticking up for his officers.

"When somebody calls me a thief ... implied that I stole this car. That I got insurance that's bogus. That my license is invalid. And I just bought a car, and I've been real nice. And the first thing he said when I rolled my window down, 'Oh, you got this nice little red car.' Yes, I have a problem with that," said Mongo.

However, what Mongo described does not appear anywhere on the police dashcam video. He believes the video offered by police does not provide an accurate record of what happened on Jefferson Avenue.

The video does show Mongo exit his car to go have words with the officer. Mongo had no wallet, no license and no proof of insurance when he was pulled over. He is heard hurling insults and profanity at the officers. The officers did have Mongo's car towed, but he was not arrested.

Mongo also called Chief Craig during the middle of the traffic stop. Craig advised him to ask for a supervisor. A supervisor already had been called.

"I will tell you, had that been me subject to the insults and the profanity, I would have made the arrest," said Craig. "No officers should have to be subject to that type of behavior."

Mongo is not amused.

"They're trying to cover their butt. They can do whatever they want to do," he said.
