DETROIT – Two people have been charged in a kidnapping case where the victim escaped by jumping out of a car's trunk Sunday morning on Interstate 94.
Patricia Jernigan, 23, and Terrell Smith, 31, are accused of forcing a 22-year-old Dearborn woman into the car's trunk at gunpoint near Warren and Lonyo avenues.
The victim used the trunk's release to open it and jumped out while the car was on eastbound I-94 near Livernois Avenue in Detroit, police said.
A witness stopped to help the victim, who was treated at Henry Ford Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said Jernigan is a former female friend of the victim and Smith is her boyfriend.
Both were arraigned Friday on charges of torture, kidnapping, criminal sexual conduct and armed robbery. Smith was also charged as a habitual offender.
