Package thieves target homes in Detroit's University District

DETROIT – A thief in Detroit’s University District is taking packages from homes and surveillance video captured a doorstep robbery.

Todd Pleiness has a state-of-the-art security system with cameras watching his home that send live alerts to his phone when someone is at his door.

While he was at work Wednesday, he watched Fedex drop off packages to his home around noon..

Pleiness received another alert around 4 p.m. when someone else was at his door and it wasn’t a delivery driver.

"I immediately tried to call the cops to say 'Hey, I just had a package stolen. The guy is going northbound on Wildemere,'" Pleiness said.

Detroit police said this man is just one of many package thieves targeting homes throughout Detroit’s University District. The thefts started before the holidays and haven’t let up since.

The man drives a blue van with a missing hubcap.

A hotline was set up for tips about this package thief and can be reached at 313-596-1221.
