Armed thief hitting check-cashing stores in Macomb County

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A string of armed robberies at check-cashing stores in Macomb County have police on high alert and the FBI involved.

Robberies have happened in Sterling Heights and Clinton Township, but the surveillance video from an incident in Shelby Township offered such clear video that police believe someone will be able to identify them.

“Rarely do we have such great images,” Deputy Chief Mark Coil of the Shelby Township police said. “Usually we’re dealing with some kind of grainy image and this one is pretty clear cut, cut and dry.”

The Advance America in Shelby Township at 21 Mile Road and van Dyke was hit three weeks ago.

The robbery in Sterling Heights took place at a store on Mound Road and the robbery in Clinton Township was on Garfield Road.

“We put weeks into this investigation,” Det. Lt. Jason Schmittler of the Shelby Township police said. “It happened nearly three weeks ago.”

Schmittler is leading Shelby Township's investigation.

“It’s very frustrating,” Schmittler said. “We’re hoping that the public comes forward, somebody recognizes him and gives us a call.
