Michigan State stunned by Middle Tennessee in first round

No. 15 seed Middle Tennessee State sent the biggest shock yet through the NCAA Tournament on Friday, knocking off second-seeded Michigan State 90-81 in the first round.

Reggie Upshaw scored 21 points to lead the balanced Blue Raiders (25-9), who shut down player of the year candidate Denzel Valentine. Middle Tennessee never trailed the Spartans (29-6) in one of the biggest upsets since the tournament began seeding teams in 1985.

It was the eighth time a No. 2 seed lost to a No. 15, and first since Florida Gulf Coast beat Georgetown in 2013. The Eagles went on to reach the Sweet 16.

The Spartans were considered by many to be deserving of a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, making Friday's outcome one of the biggest upsets in college basketball history.

It was a tough was for senior Denzel Valentine to end his career. Valentine guaranteed a Spartan national championship after MSU's senior night win over Ohio State in East Lansing.

Congressmen tell Snyder, EPA chief to resign over Flint water crisis

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and EPA aministrator Gina McCarthy were on Capitol Hill on Thursday testifying before Congress about their roles in the Flint water crisis.

"There is no doubt in my mind that if a corporate CEO did what Governor Snyder's administration has done, he would be hauled up on criminal charges," Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, the senior Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said of the Republican governor.

Mateen Cleaves arraigned on sexual assault charge

Wayne County prosecutor: 'I am extremely disappointed'

Former Michigan State University basketball star Mateen Cleaves has been charged with holding a woman against her will in a motel and sexually assaulting her.

Cleaves, 39, was charged Tuesday by Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy with unlawful imprisonment, assault with intent to commit criminal sexual penetration, second-degree criminal sexual conduct and third-degree criminal sexual conduct. Get more information on the case here.

Kalamazoo shootings suspect told police Uber app controlled him 'like artificial intelligence'

The 911 calls and arrest video from February's massacre in Kalamazoo depict the horror and chaos as a gunman struck again and again, leaving six people dead.

Jason Dalton had his family dog in the car with him when he allegedly began his shooting rampage. Dalton apparently was working as an Uber driver and taking fares during his shooting spree. He blames the Uber app he was using for the violence, telling police after he was arrested Feb. 20 that the app took him over "like artificial intelligence that can tap into you body," according to a police document.

Detroit firefighters rescue residents from apartment building fire

Several people were rescued early Thursday morning from an apartment building fire on Detroit's west side.

The two-alarm fire on Schaefer Highway, just south of 8 Mile Road, started at about 5:30 a.m. in a lower level apartment.

"Before I knew it, people were saying, ‘Fire, fire, fire.’I look outside and I see the smoke coming," said Rodney Tyson. Tyson talked more about the incident here.
