Car drives into Clinton River Spillway

Woman suffered minor injuries

MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – A 24-year-old Warren woman is in the hospital after she drove her car into the Clinton River Spillway.

The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday on westbound I-94 in between Metro Parkway and Shook Road, the Macomb County Sheriff's Office said.

The woman reportedly had a medical problem, ran off the roadway, and drove into the river.

Police arrived on the scene minutes later to jump into the Spillway to help rescue the woman. Her car was halfway submerged in water and the woman was coming in and out of consciousness.

Deputies initially could not gain entry into her vehicle, but with the help of the St. Clair Shores Fire Rescue they were able to break the front passenger door windows and remove her before the car was completely submerged.

Shortly afterward, Macomb County Dive Team helped a tow truck get the 2008 Chevrolet Uplander out of the water.

The woman was transported to McLaren Hospital where she was treated for minor injuries.
