Late mother's gift to son stolen at Livonia Rec Center

Ryan Law says his mother's wedding band was stolen from locker

LIVONIA, Mich. – A ring that was stolen at a Livonia Recreation Center is more than just a piece of jewelry to Ryan Law. The ring was Law's mother's wedding band, and he's worn it every day for 13 years since she died from cancer.

"I understand that people probably bash me for bringing something like that into a locker room, but I have a lock," Law said. "I've been here for eight years. I've been a member. I've never had a problem."

The locker was at the Livonia Rec Center, where Law went to work out Wednesday at 3 p.m. When he returned to the locker an hour later, his wallet, his ring and his lock were gone.

"I thought I was safe bringing it in here," Law said. "I have a nice lock, but apparently bolt cutters can cut locks."

Law said he was enraged when he found out his ring was gone.

"I kicked a towel machine, I went through garbage cans looking for my IDs, for my locks," Law said. "I literally ran as fast as I could to the front desk."

The Rec Center is on the case, with cameras pointed straight towards the men's locker room entrance. Police and staff will be going over minute after minute of footage. With 48 cameras in place, director Dave Varga said security is No. 1.

"We're going to do our best to hopefully get to the bottom of this and get an answer, and hopefully he finds his ring," Varga said. "That's what we really want to see happen."

The ring is unique.

"It's 14-carat gold and it's a floating diamond," Law said. "So if you looked at it from the side, you would say, 'How is that even holding it in there?'"

While he's slowly getting the stolen contents back, he's hoping someone will have the heart to give back what's irreplaceable.

"That one piece, the ring, (can't) be replaced," Law said. "The other stuff can. I can't replace a deceased mother's gift to me."

There were no other reports of theft or locker break-ins that day. If you have any information about the stolen ring, you're asked to call Livonia police.
