Sterling Heights bank robbery suspect in custody after releasing hostage in neighborhood

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – Police have a suspect in custody Monday morning after an armed bank robbery in Sterling Heights where a person was taken hostage and later released.

The robbery happened at the Vibe Credit Union on Van Dyke, north of 14 Mile Road.

Police said the gunman was wearing a fake beard, a hooded sweatshirt and rubber boots.

The bank robber left the bank and carjacked a commercial truck and took a hostage who was released in a nearby neighborhood.

“The suspect actually duct taped three of the employees of the Vibe bank and as he was leaving the establishment actually carjacked a commercial vehicle that had a man that was doing some business at the bank as well and forced him to drive to a neighborhood street where he got out on foot and fled,” Sterling Heights police Chief John Berg said.

The suspect allegedly kicked his way into a garage and tried to set fire to his disguise.

He was later chased down by a K-9 unit and was taken into custody in the area of Irving Road and Chatsworth Drive.
