DETROIT – One of the two men involved in the carjacking of a 49-year-old woman’s vehicle at a gas station forcing her 85-year-old mother out of the car was in court Tuesday for sentencing.

Dontonio Jones, 21, pleaded guilty to third-degree fleeing from a police officer, assaulting a police officer, receiving and concealing stolen property less than $200, unlawful driving away of a motor vehicle and second offense habitual offender. He was sentenced to three years of probation.

Jones and Deonte Russell, 20, carjacked a band new Chevy Tahoe from a woman and her elderly mother at the Citgo gas station at Fenkell Avenue and Greenfield Road on Sept. 2. The pair was driving a silver Ford.

About 15 minutes later, police were investigating a separate attempted carjacking at Fenkell Avenue and Evergreen Road when officers spotted the silver Ford. After a brief pursuit, the Ford crashed at Hubble Avenue and Plymouth road. A family with two small kids in one vehicle and a woman in a minivan suffered minor injuries in the three-car crash.

Police said Jones and Russell tried to flee on foot, but they were quickly arrested. Tips from the public led police to the recovery of the stolen Tahoe about an hour after the carjacking took place.

Russell was sentenced under HYTA (Holmes youthful Trainee Act) and no information regarding his sentence can be released.
