Private funeral, public memorial to be held for Mike Ilitch, family says

DETROIT – The Ilitch family released a statement  regarding funeral arrangements for sports icon Mike Ilitch, who died Friday at the age of 87.

A statement released by Ilitch's companies said a private funeral will be held for Ilitch. A public memorial is being planned, and details on the date and location will be released soon.

"The family will honor Mr. Ilitch at a private funeral service," the statement said. " An opportunity for members of the public to pay their respects is also being planned. Details will be announced as soon as they are finalized."

The Ilitch family is asking those who wish to make donations to turn to its family-owned charities:
