Macomb County clerk drama: Karen Spranger seeks lawyer for court battle with Hackel

Drama surrounds Macomb County Clerk Karen Spranger

MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – She was a dark horse candidate who swept into office on the strength of Donald Trump's numbers in Macomb County, but it's been a rocky road for Macomb County Clerk Karen Spranger ever since.

On Monday, the Macomb County Board of Commissioners is poised to shut Spranger down.

Spranger is asking for $15,000 for an independent counsel for a variety of reasons, chiefly so she can learn how to legally get rid of some of the unionized employees in the office and bring in her political allies to fill those jobs.

Needless to say, there's drama at every corner.

"Nothing is out of the realm of my concern right now in this office," Chairman Bob Smith said.

Spranger had nothing to say as she walked into the meeting with the board of commissioners. She has fired her two top deputies over the weekend because they independently filed complaints against her.

Spranger has had multiple grievances filed against her from workers in the office, and her IT privileges have been revoked by the county because she allegedly was allowing non-county personnel into the database to look at private information.

The Board of Commissioners is trying to figure out what to do next. Sources told Local 4 they're going to shut down the independent council request, but the question becomes whether the business in the office is being done. Right now, nobody seems able to answer the question.

Sources said they think the case will end up in litigation.
