DETROIT – Although internet sensation April the Giraffe lives in upstate New York, the Detroit Zoo is currently home to a giraffe mama of their own.
The giraffe housed at the Detroit Zoo named Kivuli gave birth to her first calf named Mpenzi after a 15-month gestation period in 2014 the Detroit Zoo.

Kivuli gave birth to a second calf named Zawadi last year in August after a 14-month gestation period.
Zawadi was born outside, and was able to take her first steps within a half hour after birth. Baby Zawadi weighed 166 pounds and stood more than 5 feet tall at birth.

The Detroit Zoo says giraffes give birth standing up, causing the newborn to fall more than 5 feet, enough to break the umbilical cord.
The giraffe is the tallest of all land mammals and the Detroit Zoo says they can reach heights of up to 18 feet and weigh up to 2,600 pounds.
