DETROIT – On a warm spring day, the men and women of the Detroit Police Department’s 6th and 8th precincts spent Thursday afternoon at a cook-off to benefit the community.
Members of the DPD are collecting ties to give to more than 200 young men in the fifth through eighth grade.
"To some of these young males, it's their first tie, and the intimate part of it is teaching them how to tie it," DPD Lt. Mark Young said. "We know taking and tying a tie is important, and it takes some work; but guess what, it's a start."
Young says the department is running out of ties and could use a little help from the community to keep the effort going.
"I believe the tie is an intimate piece of apparel. That's why I like giving the young men not only new ties, but gently used ties," Young said. "There's a lot of history behind a tie. We wear our ties to our most important events, and that tie is important and again it's about the spark starting the flame."
If you would like to donate ties, you can drop them off at this location:
Detroit Police Lieutenants and Sergeants Association
28 W. Adams Suite 700, Detroit, MI 48226.
