DETROIT – A 51-year-old woman was sentenced Monday morning in the death of a 72-year-old man in a roll over crash on Woodward Avenue in Detroit.
Kellie Nichole Stock was found not guilty by a jury of second-degree murder and guilty on all other charges. She was sentenced to 19 to 50 years in prison.
The crash happened at about 2:15 p.m. on March 20 on Woodward Avenue near State Fair Avenue.
Bennie Sims, 72, of Detroit, was killed in the crash.
Stock was driving a Dodge Intrepid and was traveling the wrong way on a nearby street. Police were waiting for the woman to turn onto Woodward Avenue. When she turned, she sped off, police said, and hit a Ford Ranger driven by Sims.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Stock with second-degree murder, reckless driving causing death, operating while intoxicated causing death, operating while license is suspended causing death, first-degree fleeing, second-degree fleeing, reckless driving causing serious impairment of a body function, operating while intoxicated causing serious injury, and operating while license is suspended causing serious injury.
Sims' niece spoke at the sentencing say that Sims and her father spent every day together and her father hasn't been the same since the crash.
Stock apologized before the court before telling the judge that the arresting officers should have been fired and that she has turned her life around since her previous felony conviction in 2004.
The judge had harsh words for the woman who had been paroled 19 times and was a parole absconder at the time of the crash.
"It's truly amazing to me that her insight and judgment blames the police somehow for this," the judge said. "She's the one that fled from police. She's the one that ran a red light. She's the one that was high on drugs. She's the one that was in a stolen car. She's the one that slammed into a car and killed Bennie Sims."
