Children escape attempted abduction on way to school in Detroit

DETROIT – Two children on their way to school escaped an attempted abduction Wednesday morning in Detroit.

A 13-year-old girl and her 10-year-old brother were walking to school when a man jumped over a fence and grabbed the girl.

“I was walking to school and grabbed me by my jacket,” the girl said. “He put a gun up to my head and said, ‘Don’t move.’”

The incident happened at the corner of Redmond and Lappin streets.

The girl told her brother to run and she was able to break the man’s grip. She ran to school after escaping.

Police stepped up patrols in the area.

Regent Park Scholars Charter Academy released the following statement:

"The safety and security of our students at Regent Park Scholars is the highest concern for National Heritage Academies. Local authorities have been contacted regarding this morning’s incident, and an investigation is underway. National Heritage Academies will cooperate fully with local law enforcement as they seek to get to the bottom of this, and want to assure parents and the community that we take seriously maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for our students. We continue to encourage parents and students to report any suspicious activity."
