Michigan doctor gets jail time for writing fraudulent prescriptions for Ritalin

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich. – A Michigan doctor will serve jail time for writing fraudulent prescriptions.

WPBN reports Mark Brewster of Traverse City, Michigan, was sentenced to 10 months in prison after pleading guilty in federal court.

The investigation found that Brewster wrote 150 fraudulent prescriptions for Ritalin between 2005 and 2015.

Authorities said the prescriptions were written in the names of seven people, and the dosage was more than five times the maximum approved by the FDA.

At his sentencing, the judge described the crimes as "a product of the doctor's arrogance."

Ritalin (methylphenidate) is a central nervous system stimulant. It affects chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control. Ritalin is used to treat attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and narcolepsy.
