Police: Dallas officer shoots, kills man after entering wrong apartment

Officer entered victim's apartment 'believing that it was her own'

DALLAS, Texas. – Dallas police are trying to obtaining a warrant on manslaughter charges against a police officer who allegedly entered an apartment "believing that it was her own," and fatally shot a man inside.

Police said the officer arrived at the apartment complex, where she lives, in full uniform after her shift.

She entered the victim's apartment, allegedly believing that it was hers, and fatally shot a 26-year-old man inside.

Dallas Police Chief Ulysha Renee Hall held a press conference Friday where she identified the victim as Botham Shem Jean, they will not identify the officer until she is officially charged.

However, Hall said the officer was a female patrol officer. She has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

"A blood sample was drawn to test for drugs and alcohol," she said.

Chief Hall said it was not clear what interaction occurred between the officer and Jean, just that the officer fired her weapon striking Jean.

The officer called 911 before 10 p.m. Thursday and officers responded within four minutes. Dallas Fire Rescue transported Jean to a hospital where he later died.

Hall said it "as we continued the investigation it became clear it was a unique situation."

The police department is no longer handling it with their normal officer involved shooting procedures. The Texas Rangers will conduct an independent investigation.

"There are more questions than we have answers," Hall said.

Hall is not certain where the officer is at this time. The officer has not yet been questioned.

Police believed, based on the circumstances, that they were investigating an officer involved shooting.

However, during the press conference Hall said "circumstances led us to another direction." The shooting will be investigated separately.
