NOVI, Mich. – The proceeds from Merit, a clothing store at Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi, help Detroit teens go to college.
The athletic-inspired clothes are custom made, and for the past four years, the company has donated 26 percent of its revenue to pay for an after-school mentoring program. The money also provides scholarship money to help students pay for college.
Students meet at a newly renovated church on Detroit's west side weekly for the program, which is designed to be nontraditional so they don't feel like they are stuck in a classroom.
Many of the students in the program are behind in proficiency levels and have grades that are behind in math and reading.
