Family of teen killed in police pursuit aims to make safe place for ATV riders

DETROIT – It’s been six weeks since 15-year-old Damon Grimes was killed during a pursuit by state police.

The officer accused of using a stun gun on Grimes has resigned, and two separate investigations are underway.

State police said the teen ignored orders to stop riding his all-terrain vehicle illegally in his neighborhood.

Now, his family is hoping others will have a safe space to ride by turning a parcel of land at Conner and Frankfort into an ATV park.

Family and friends rode their ATVs as a way to pay tribute to Damon Grimes.

"We need people with resources to help make this happen," community activist Oliver Gantt said. "By next summer we want to see the first ATV park in Detroit."

Officers said they deployed a stun gun after Damon Grimes ignored orders to stop riding his ATV illegally.

"That was my baby (brother)," Dezanique Grimes said. "(It's) hard to believe he is gone."

Michigan State Police and the Detroit Police Department launched separate investigations following the teen's death in Detroit in August.

The trooper accused of using his stun gun on the teen has resigned.  Two other troopers have been suspended.

Damon Grimes crashed into a flatbed and died from blunt force head injuries, according to the medical examiner

"Everyone wants to see justice in this matter," Gantt said. "We don’t want to see things like that."

Family members said they hope the piece of land can be turned into an ATV Park in Damon Grimes’ honor

"It’s a great thing," Dezanique Grimes said. "If they can’t ride on the street, they can hook up to a trailer and ride freely."

Family members, activists and members of the clergy are planning a protest next weekend at MSP headquarters to demand a thorough investigation and justice for their son.
