DETROIT – A Detroit police officer who was convicted in the deadly beating of Malice Green has died.
Larry Nevers and his partner Walter Budzyn arrested Green on Nov. 5, 1992, at a drug house.

They were convicted of beating him to death with flashlight. However, at their trial, another report showed Green had cocaine in his system at the time of his death and actually died from an enlarged heart that was aggravated from a struggle with the officers.
The case made headlines because the officers were white and Green was black.
Nevers was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 7 - 15 years in prison. The state Appeals Court overturned his charges but the Supreme Court upheld his conviction.
He developed cancer while incarcerated and was released in 2001 to serve the rest of his sentence at home.
The Macomb County medical examiner's office says Nevers died Sunday at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital. He was 72.
No details about the cause were immediately available.
He and his wife lived in Macomb Township.
