NEWAYGO COUNTY, Mich. – Two people were rescued and treated for hypothermia after falling through ice while riding snowmobiles in Michigan, officials said.

At about 10 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2025, Newaygo County deputies responded to the Croton Dam Pond in Croton Township after the caller reported that two people on snowmobiles had fallen through the ice.

When they arrived, they found one person on the shore. This person had safely gotten out of the water without assistance, according to the Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office.

Firefighters responded and safely rescued the person who was still in the water.

Both snowmobilers were taken to the hospital to be treated for hypothermia.

The sheriff’s office said alcohol is believed to be a factor.

This comes as the Michigan Department of Natural Resources issued a reminder about putting safety first when operating a snowmobile.

As of Feb. 4, 2025, 10 people have died during the 2024-25 snowmobile riding season.
