SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A man who allegedly led law enforcement on a chase through Macomb County before being shot by police has been charged with multiple felonies.

According to authorities, it started Sunday, March 16, when Michael Southworth reportedly used the butt of a long gun to shatter the driver’s window of a Cadillac at a gas station in Shelby Township.
After that, he allegedly led Macomb County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Michigan State Police troopers on a chase north on M-53 before his vehicle left the roadway and stopped in a field north of 34 Mile Road in Washington Township.
Southworth reportedly exited the Jeep with a gun in his hand and ignored commands to drop it. A trooper shot Southworth in the leg and he was taken into custody.
Southworth was charged Wednesday, March 19, with third-degree fleeing and eluding, assault with a dangerous weapon, assaulting/resisting a police officer, malicious destruction of property, possession of a firearm and three counts of felony firearm.
He was given a $1 million bond and remains lodged at the Macomb County Jail.
The police trooper has been placed on leave while the shooting is under investigation.
