SUV passing school bus by driving on sidewalk nearly hits child in northern Michigan

ONAWAY, Mich. – A child in northern Michigan exiting a school bus was nearly hit by a vehicle driving on the sidewalk.

It happened Monday, March 17, on M-33 in Onaway, about 40 miles southeast of Mackinaw City.

Michigan State Police released video of the driver passing a school bus by driving on the sidewalk, nearly striking a child exiting the bus. Police said the bus had its lights activated at the time.

The vehicle is described as a white SUV with a flame decal on the side.

In Michigan, drivers are required to stop when a school bus has its flashing lights activated. Not stopping for a school bus can result in a fine between $100 and $500. The driver may also be required to perform community service.
