SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A woman was arrested and charged after allegedly stealing from people at a senior citizen community in Shelby Township.

The investigation began after multiple senior citizens reported to officers between May 5 and May 14 that jewelry had been missing from their rooms. Police said the jewelry ranged from necklaces, pendants and wedding rings.

While a detective was working on the case, he received an anonymous tip that an employee working at the senior citizen community may be involved in stealing the jewelry.

The detective used a law enforcement database to look up and see if any items may have been pawned or sold. He later found a name that kept popping up during his search. According to police, the name matched the employee mentioned in the anonymous tip.

Police said the detective was able to recover the items that were missing or stolen from the senior citizen community, and officers waited for the employee to come to work before arresting her.

Nicole Putman was arraigned on May 16, 2025, for a charge of felony-larceny in a building. She was given a $5,000 bond.

“Due to the diligent work from our detective bureau, we were able to bring justice to those who try to take advantage of senior citizens. Let this be a clear message: we will not tolerate anyone preying on our senior citizens,” said Shelby Township Chief of Police Robert J. Shelide. “Our officers are committed to protecting the innocent and bringing justice to those who threaten public safety.”
