WARREN, Mich. – Two police chases in Warren, one turning deadly and one causing significant property damage to multiple homes, are drawing concern from residents as they witness danger in their neighborhoods.
Now, Warren police plan to address concerns surrounding that fatal crash at a news conference on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
Just two days after a 71-year-old woman was killed during a police chase, neighbors on Audrey Street near Elza Street said that chase could have just as easily turned tragic.
It all unfolded early Monday (May 27) afternoon.
Although it was a short police pursuit, it ended violently, with tire tracks in the street and grass, two mangled fences, and a porch left unsafe to use.
Linda Minda, who witnessed the crash, described the moment she and her husband thought they heard gunshots.
“The car got spun around, so the front end was facing the street. How fast was he actually going?” said Minda.
Joseph Likowski, another neighbor who saw the aftermath of the chase, said, “They came down the street and kept hitting other cars and trash cans. They ended up crashing over here on the corner.”
The driver reportedly fled from police after a traffic stop at the intersection of 9 Mile Road and Masch Avenue.
Officers said he eventually crashed and attempted to run on foot, but was arrested at the scene.
“This poor homeowner. Who pays for this now? Do they have to?” Minda asked, looking at the damage.
Thankfully, no one was injured in Monday’s crash, but neighbors couldn’t help but point out how close it came to tragedy.
Likowski said the car landed right where his son often plays outside.
“If [my son] was there that day, then something unfortunately could’ve happened,” said Likowski.
On Saturday night, another police chase near 9 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue had a more devastating outcome.
Around 9:30 p.m., police reported attempting to pull over a black Chrysler 300 that was driving recklessly on Van Dyke Avenue.
The driver refused to stop, and the situation quickly escalated into a high-speed pursuit.
During the chase, police stated that the Chrysler struck two other vehicles, one of which was driven by a 71-year-old woman.
She was rushed to the hospital, where she later died. The second crash did not result in serious injuries.
“To a certain degree, they should call it off,” said Victor Baez, who witnessed the fatal crash. “When they’re getting into these high-speed chases, the guys that are getting chased start panicking, and that’s when things happen. That’s when things go down.”
The recent string of pursuits is the latest in a growing list of chase-related incidents in Warren.
Xavier Powell, 25, of Warren, faces felony charges after a high-speed pursuit ended in a crash.
This incident occurred on Monday (May 26) at 11:50 a.m. when a Warren police officer on routine patrol in a fully marked patrol car attempted a traffic stop on a black Chrysler 300 for window tint and other violations near 9 Mile Road and Masch Avenue.
In March, a police chase ended with a car crashing into a home. In February, another chase led to two separate crashes, one of which hospitalized a 12-year-old girl.
And last year, a lawsuit was filed after a speeding police cruiser killed two people.
“It’s causing a lot of property damage,” said Likowski. “And there’s a lot of innocent people being hurt in the process.”
