DETROIT – The family of the man killed by a former Grand Rapids police officer said they are heartbroken there will not be any criminal responsibility for their son’s death.
Christopher Schurr shot and killed Patrick Lyoya during a traffic stop in 2022. Schurr’s lawyers claimed he acted in self-defense.
His second-degree murder trial ended in a mistrial earlier in May. The prosecutor later stated that he would not put Schurr on trial again, explaining that he did not believe a second jury would reach a different verdict.
On May 29, Lyoya’s family spoke to the media, saying they feel the criminal justice failed them.
“I would never be happy until we find justice for Patrick,” said Dorcas Lyoya, Patrick’s mother.
The Lyoya family has filed a civil lawsuit against Schurr and the City of Grand Rapids.
