CHARLESTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Authorities are once again reminding drivers of Michigan’s Move Over Law after another driver hit a police cruiser on a major freeway this year.

Michigan’s expanded “Move Over” law took effect back in 2019. It required drivers to slow to 10 mph below the posted speed limit and yield their lane when passing police or emergency vehicles on the side of the road.

It happened at about 3 p.m. Thursday, May 29, on I-94 in Kalamazoo County.

According to authorities, two Michigan State Police troopers had their emergency lights on as they were assisting a vehicle on the shoulder, near Charleston Township -- about halfway between Kalamazoo and Battle Creek -- when a Dodge Dart rear-ended their police cruiser.

Police said the driver was cited for speeding and driving on a suspended license. They do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

No major injuries were reported as all four people were wearing seatbelts at the time.
