Affordable housing, public safety, education: What candidates said in WDIV’s Detroit mayoral debate
The Detroit mayoral debate hosted by Local 4 ended a little heated during closing statements Monday night.
Candidates James Craig, Saunteel Jenkins, Solomon Kinloch Jr. and Mary Sheffield participated in a debate at Wayne State University on June 16.
Local 4’s morning co-anchor and Flashpoint host Jason Colthorp served as moderator of the debate, which was co-sponsored by AARP and presented in partnership with the Michigan Chronicle.
Wayne County officials warn of rising ‘deed theft’ cases in Detroit
The Wayne County Register of Deeds believes that there are currently at least a dozen homes that have been stolen through an intricate crime called “deed theft – which involves fraudulently transferring ownership of a property by forging a deed.
“If you know anything about me, housing is extremely important to me, especially home ownership,” Detroit City Councilwoman Latisha Johnson said on Monday night.
Johnson, who represents District 4 on the city’s southeast side, was joined by Sandra Bucciero from the Register of Deeds’ Fraud Unit during a community meeting at Brown’s Chapel Missionary Baptist Church on East Warren.
Israel’s strikes on Tehran broaden as Trump issues ominous warning
Israel appeared to be expanding its air campaign on Tehran five days after its surprise attack on Iran’s military and nuclear program, as U.S. President Donald Trump posted an ominous message warning residents of the city to evacuate.
“IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON,” Trump wrote Monday night before returning to Washington early from a Group of Seven summit in Canada. “Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!” he added.
Trump later denied reports that he had rushed back to Washington to work on a ceasefire, saying his early departure “has nothing to do with a Cease Fire. Much bigger than that,” without elaborating.
Community mourns after toddler drowns near home in Harrison Township
A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded late Monday morning in Harrison Township when 2-year-old Maxwell Anderson was reported missing from his family’s home off Manse Street.
Tamara Canady, who works at the marina nearby, described the chaotic moments after the first 911 call came in around 11 a.m.
“I saw at least eight cop cars flying from the station that’s right across the street here past my marina,” she told Local 4.
Weather: Strong storms likely in Metro Detroit on Wednesday after heat cranks up
We have issued a 4Warn Weather alert for Wednesday as Southeast Michigan is under a slight and enhanced risk for severe storms.
There will be a chance for morning/midday showers and storms as a warm front lifts across the region.
However, the greatest severe threat lies late Wednesday afternoon and evening as the surface low tracks across central Michigan with an attached cold front.
All hazards will be in play: Damaging wind gusts greater than 70 mph, a few tornadoes will be possible, large hail (greater than an inch in diameter) and heavy rainfall leading to flooding.
