2 dead, 1 OK after canoe capsizes in Lake Superior, authorities say

One person made it to shore and called 911

KEWEENAW COUNTY, Mich. – Two people are dead after a canoe capsized in Lake Superior over the weekend, officials said.

Three people were canoeing in Copper Harbor at about 3:50 a.m. on Saturday, June 28, 2025, when they capsized, according to the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office.

One of those people made it to shore and called 911.

Several agencies responded, and the body of one of the individuals was recovered on Saturday.

Search and rescue operations continued Sunday, and the body of the second missing person was recovered, authorities said.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the families, friends, and loved ones affected by this tragic event,” the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office said. “We ask that their privacy be respected during this incredibly difficult time. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all of the agencies and personnel who assisted in this operation, including Keweenaw Search and Rescue, Copper Harbor FD, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Michigan State Police dive team, Michigan DNR, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, local area restaurants and businesses who donated food and supplies.”
