DETROIT – A heatwave is making its way to Southeast Michigan and DTE Energy is sharing tips to help people stay comfortable in the heat. By following these tips, viewers can keep cool and lower energy use to avoid spikes in their bills:

  • Shade your home - close curtains and shades on sun-facing windows to keep the heat out and your home cool and comfortable.
  • Use a fan - a fan cools people, not rooms, so use one to create a breeze and turn it off when you leave the room to save energy.
  • Use your appliances in the evening - postpone doing laundry or dishwashing until later in the day once outdoor temperatures begin to cool to avoid adding heat and humidity to your home.
  • Optimize your AC - keep your unit clear of debris and the filter clean to reduce strain on the unit. It’s best to clean or change your filter once every three months.
  • Raise your thermostat - when you are away from your home, raise the temperature a few degrees to reduce costs. Pre-cool your home before 3 p.m. or after 7 p.m. to take advantage of lower, off-peak rates to help you manage your energy use while keeping your home comfortable.

DTE Energy also urges everyone to use caution during extreme high temperatures:

  • Drink plenty of fluids and stay out of direct sunlight, if possible
  • Check on family, neighbors and the most vulnerable to make sure they’re safe and cool
  • Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing
  • Bring pets inside
  • DO NOT leave people or pets in the car
  • Try to avoid high energy outdoor activities
  • Be aware of heat sickness – watch for signs and symptoms like muscle cramps, headaches, nausea, dizziness and clammy skin
