From algal blooms to harmful bacteria in the water, there are a number of factors that could cause a beach to close.
There are thousands of public beaches in Michigan -- after all, we are the Great Lakes State -- how can you find out if a beach is open before you pack the car with towels, snacks and sunscreen?
Well, as it turns out, Michigan has you covered. Rather than having to hunt down whatever municipality’s social media pages to see if an alert or advisory has popped up, the state has consolidated all information in one place: BeachGuard.
Michigan’s beach monitoring website provides information regarding closures, monitoring efforts, bacteria levels and more. There’s even an interactive map showing the latest water quality tests from local health departments.
