Patel was accused of scamming a Shelby Township couple by sending them an email that said they had fraudulent charges on their credit card for buying child pornography.

The couple said they were told to withdraw $50,000 from their bank account and give it to a man claiming to be from the Treasury Department. The scam included a warning not to tell anyone about the situation, according to authorities.

Shelby Township police named Patel a suspect in the case, accusing him of sending the $50,000 to India and trying to defraud others.

He was charged May 5, 2025, with larceny of $20,000 or more and false pretenses between $50,000 and $100,000.

On July 15, 2025, the case was dismissed at the local level because it has been turned over to the FBI.

Patel is now in FBI custody.
