Michigan dam problems lowers water levels, disrupts lakefront properties, city beach

Lakefront property in one Michigan community has disappeared and a city beach has been drained after a potential dam failure caused the DNR to lower water levels by several feet.

It happened in White Cloud, roughly an hour north of Grand Rapids.

The White Cloud Dam, first built 150 years ago and rebuilt in 1990 after breaking during a 1986 flood, is one of two dams on the 89-mile White River. The river begins in northern Newaygo County and empties into Lake Michigan near Montague and Whitehall.

Detroit Tigers’ Tarik Skubal leaves mark in 1st All-Star Start with ABS milestone, strikeouts, runs

Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal has been named the American League starter for the 2025 Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

Skubal, who pitched a scoreless inning in last year’s All-Star Game, gave up two runs while striking out two and recording the first ever ABS challenge in All-Star Game history in his one and only outing.

Michigan to auction over 100 parcels of land. Here’s a location list, how to bid

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is preparing for its annual land auction.

For the 2025 event, 126 properties will be for sale via online auctions in August and early September.

Some of the parcels of land include river frontage, lake frontage and forested acreage surrounded by private ownership.

Michigan lawmaker pushes for cursive writing instruction in schools

A Michigan lawmaker is continuing to push for students to learn to read and write cursive in schools.

Rep. Brenda Carter, D-Pontiac, introduced House Bill 4675, which would require the Michigan Department of Education to develop “a list of model programs of instruction on cursive” by June 1, 2027.

“Beginning with the 2027-2028 school year, the board of a school district or intermediate school district or board of directors of a public school academy is strongly encouraged to incorporate one of the model programs of instruction into the curriculum,” according to the bill.

A few isolated showers have popped up on radar this morning, but are quickly waning. With that said, shower and thunderstorm chances increase midday with isolated strong to severe wind gusts possible and the potential for heavy rainfall through this evening.

All of Southeast Michigan is under a marginal (level 1 our of 5) risk for severe storms today with highs in the upper 80s.
