Morning 4 is a quick roundup of stories we think you should know about to start your day. So, let’s get to the news.
Oakland County couple face child abuse charges
A 4-year-old girl was brought to the hospital on Dec. 21, 2025, with a broken left leg and a broken right arm, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.
Doctors said the two broken bones were in different stages of healing.
The girl’s mother, Kimberly Ann McGarry, told doctors that her daughter had fallen down the stairs two weeks prior at their home in the 46000 block of Dequindre Road in Rochester Hills.
‘I also go by Risen Phoenix’
“Afeni Badu Muhammad -- I also go by Risen Phoenix.”
Those are the first words we heard this week from the woman accused of stabbing her McDonald’s manager to death in Eastpointe.
Muhammad, 26, of Eastpointe, was back in court this week for a probable cause conference. She is accused of first-degree murder and other charges after the July 10, 2025, death of Jennifer Harris, 39, at the McDonald’s on 9 Mile Road.
The July 23 hearing was ultimately adjourned, but here’s what you should know from what happened.
Basement flooding bill introduced by lawmakers
Three lawmakers have introduced legislation that would require the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to repair basements damaged by flooding.
U.S. Reps. Rashida Tlaib (MI-12), Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) and Shontel Brown (OH-11) introduced the Fix Our Flooded Basements Act to ensure that federal assistance would cover basements.
“In Southeast Michigan, we know firsthand the devastating impacts severe flooding can have on our families,” said Tlaib. “We have seen the destruction it causes in our neighborhoods and the basements of our homes. Water damage can ruin electrical systems, destroy heating and cooling systems, damage foundations, and create long-term mold and health issues. As flooding becomes more frequent due to climate change, it’s crucial that we take action to require FEMA to provide flood victims with the full resources they need to rebuild their lives.”
Greg Kelser gives back through basketball camps
Greg Kelser has been championing lessons in basketball and life for 48 years.
“It can happen as long as you stick with it, you believe and you remain persistent,” the 1979 national champion and Michigan State alumnus said.
In college and the pros, on the court and on television as an analyst for the Detroit Pistons, Kelser’s basketball camps for kids have been a constant. The roots trace back to two years before Kelser won his title with the Spartans, inside the same West Bloomfield High School gym his camps tip off this week.
“I worked at the Dick Vitale and Bob Lanier basketball camp,” Kelser recalled. “I had so much fun, but the thing I came away with is that I can do this, so the next year I had my own basketball camp.”
