Warren man arrested after high school vehicle theft, chase into Detroit

Suspect faces multiple felony charges after pursuit

WARREN, Mich. – A 45-year-old man from Warren is facing multiple felonies after reportedly stealing an SUV and trailer from a high school.

Matthew Gonzales is accused of stealing a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado and trailer filled with tools from Warren Mott High School on Tuesday, July 29. Police said an employee of Warren Consolidated Schools was working at the school when someone entered his SUV and drove off.

The trailer reportedly had three lawnmowers, a chainsaw and a leafblower that all belonged to the school district.

Police said they found the vehicle on Mound Road, where they attempted a traffic stop, but the driver continued into Detroit, where he was arrested.

Gonzales was charged Wednesday, July 30, with larceny of $20,000 or more, unlawful driving away, third-degree fleeing police and driving with a suspended license.

He was given a $1 million bond and a substance abuse evaluation. If bond is paid, Gonzales will be required to wear a GPS tether and submit to random drug testing.
