Captain Sederick Dunbar said the shooting stemmed from a verbal altercation between a 15-year-old boy and the suspect. The teen was shot in the leg and is currently recovering in the hospital.

Dunbar explained that crisis negotiation teams spent about three hours communicating with the suspect’s family before officers made contact with the suspect.

“Time was our friend. We had our crisis negotiators on scene who were making contact with the family, we eventually made contact with the suspect and shortly after he came outside,” Dunbar said. “Our special response team, who was right in front of the house, did make contact with the suspect a few times when he came to the door. So just utilizing time, utilizing our training, tactics and skills, we were able to talk him out of the house.”

Dunbar said the suspect could be facing additional charges in addition to any charges related to the shooting.
