Detroit City Council president Mary Sheffield advances to November election in mayoral race

Mary Sheffield, Detroit City Council president, will advance to the November general election in the race for mayor, the AP projects.

Sheffield was considered the front-runner heading into the August primary on Tuesday. She’ll face the second-highest vote getter in November.

Nine candidates put their names on the ballot to be Detroit’s next mayor. On Aug. 5, 2025, the city voted on the top two candidates who will run head-to-head.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan announced in December 2024 that he will not be running for reelection. Instead, he is running as an Independent candidate for Michigan’s governor.
