St. Clair County man pleads guilty to falsifying merchant mariner course records

A St. Clair County man pleaded guilty to a felony charge related to falsifying records connected to a course he administered to students seeking to become credentialed merchant mariners.

Mel Stackpoole, 62, entered his guilty plea Tuesday (Aug. 12) afternoon to one count of knowingly altering and falsifying records and documents with the intent to impede the proper administration of a matter within the jurisdiction of the United States Coast Guard.

What police say caused gravel hauler crash that shut down I-75 for 5 hours

Police said the driver of a gravel hauler caused a crash on I-75, shutting down the freeway for more than five hours.

The crash happened around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2025, in the northbound lanes of I-75 near I-94 in Wayne County.

Michigan State Police said a 32-year-old man from Sebewaing, Michigan, was driving a gravel hauler with a double trailer. He couldn’t stop in a safe distance behind a car and rear-ended it, according to police.
