4-month-old girl killed after pickup truck hits Amish buggy outside Grand Rapids

MONTCALM TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A pickup truck collided with an Amish buggy Tuesday evening, killing a 4-month-old baby and critically injuring a 2-year-old.

The crash happened Tuesday, Aug. 12, in Montcalm Township, roughly 30 miles northeast of Grand Rapids.

According to authorities, a pickup truck was traveling east on Dickerson Lake Road, near M-91, when it attempted to pass the buggy. Upon seeing a westbound car, the driver returned to the original lane and struck the buggy.

Five children under age 5 and two adults were in the buggy at the time.

Police confirmed two of the children have been treated and released from the hospital, while a 1-year-old girl, a 2-year-old boy and their 24-year-old mother are still hospitalized. The girl and the mother are expected to be OK, while the boy remains in critical condition.

A 4-month-old girl died at the hospital.

The horse pulling the buggy was injured and euthanized to prevent further suffering.

The pickup truck driver and the man riding in the buggy suffered only minor injuries.

It was the deadly second crash in Michigan that day involving a pickup truck and an Amish family. A crash in Michigan’s Thumb killed six people just hours before.
