EAST LANSING, Mich. – A memorial honoring those affected by the mass shooting on Michigan State University’s campus in 2023 will soon be built.

The MSU Board of Trustees unanimously approved to change the landscape of a pre-existing fountain on campus for the construction of a permanent memorial commemorating the three students killed, multiple others injured and all those who were impacted by the shooting.

In October 2023, MSU created a permanent memorial committee to create a permanent on-campus memorial. The committee conducted a public survey and received community feedback on the final designs of the project.

The project will construct a memorial fountain, benches and surrounding plantings, replacing the existing fountain at Old Horticultural Gardens.

Construction is expected to cost $3.2 million, with $300,000 provided by the Spartan Strong fund and the remaining provided from capital reserves.

A date has not yet been set for the start of construction.
