4 children stranded in Lake Superior rescued by Coast Guard

Helicopter airlifts children to safety

LAKE SUPERIOR, Mich. – Four girls who were stranded on a rock in Lake Superior were airlifted to safety Sunday night.

The children were stuck near Black Beach Trailhead, off the Minnesota shore about 50 miles northeast of Duluth.

They became stuck after paddleboarding together to the island and then losing their paddleboards. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office used a boat to make contact with the four, but had to call in a Coast Guard air crew to rescue the girls.

According to authorities, the U.S. Coast Guard received a request at about 9 p.m. for helicopter assistance because the children were unable to leave the rock due to water conditions.

The helicopter took off from Traverse City and airlifted the girls to awaiting medical crews, who cleared them before returning them to their parents in a nearby field.

Footage of the rescue can be watched in the video player above.
