CALIFORNIA – Erik and Lyle Menendez are set to face California parole officials this week in a bid to secure their release from prison.
Erik, now 54, will appear before the board today, followed by Lyle, 57, tomorrow.
Convicted in 1996 for the murder of their parents, the brothers claimed they acted in self-defense after years of abuse. Prosecutors argue that the killings were driven by financial motives.
Earlier this year, a judge ruled that the brothers do not pose an unreasonable risk to society, leading to a resentencing that allows for parole consideration.
Now, the parole board will decide if they are ready for release.
If approved, California Governor Gavin Newsom will have the final say on whether the brothers walk free.
Newsom, whose office oversaw a separate and still-pending clemency application from the brothers, declined to comment on what he would do if the board recommends parole.
