Drummond Island is located in Lake Huron near the Upper Peninsula. It’s the second-largest freshwater island in the U.S. and has a population of 1,058.
The island has the largest closed-loop off-road vehicle (ORV) trail system in Michigan, and provides more than 60 miles of ATV trails and 40 miles of ORV routes, according to its tourism association.
It’s also an ideal location for birdwatching, with eight designated birdwatching spots on its North Huron Birding Trail.
On the north shore of the island, visitors can find fossil ledges, which are the fossilized remains of a saltwater coral bed.
Morel mushrooms can be found on the island in the spring, and people are encouraged to keep an eye out for rare plants and animals, including the Green Spleenwort, Round-leaved orchis and Drummond Rockcress, along with the Merlin, Osprey and Bald Eagle.
