Michigan man in ski mask assaults couple with ‘metal object’ after trying to deflate their tires

Suspect taken into custody after five-hour standoff

JACKSON COUNTY, Mich. – A Michigan man wearing a ski mask assaulted a couple with a “long metal object” after they caught him trying to deflate their car’s tires. The suspect was later arrested after a five-hour standoff with police.

The assault happened at about 11:20 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30, in the area of N. Lakeside Drive and Fifth Street in Michigan Center, according to the Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety. Michigan Center is located within Leoni Township in Jackson County.

A woman called 911 to report that a man in a ski mask was in her and her boyfriend’s driveway and was trying to deflate their car’s tires.

When they confronted the man, he allegedly assaulted them with “a long metal object.”

After that, he ran away, but the woman’s boyfriend chased after him.

During the chase, the boyfriend managed to remove the suspect’s ski mask, revealing the suspect’s identity, which he relayed to dispatch.

Police said the suspect is a 41-year-old Jackson man, but didn’t reveal any other details about his identity.

The suspect was located later that day at a home on Catalpa Drive. He was armed with a gun and refused to come outside. There was also a woman and several children inside the home with him.

After a five-hour standoff, the suspect was arrested without further incident, police said. He was taken to the Jackson County Jail on multiple felony charges.

The following day, Aug. 31, the Jackson County Dive Team recovered a weapon from Michigan Center Lake. Police believe the suspect threw the weapon in there while fleeing after the assault.

The investigation is ongoing. Police say more information will be released as they continue to investigate.
