MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido is holding a town hall on Thursday night to address gun storage safety and its relationship to teen gun violence.
The prosecutor’s office received funding through the Safe Storage Initiative Grant from the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan (PAAM) to promote the Safe Gun Storage Saves Lives program.
The Safe Gun Storage Saves Lives program targets parents, guardians, and middle and high school students. Its goal is to educate firearm owners about legal safe storage requirements, the connection between unsecured guns and youth violence and suicide, and the potential consequences of failing to secure firearms.
The campaign launches during National Suicide Prevention Month, which is a period of time focused on raising awareness about mental health and preventing self-harm, especially among young people.
To kick off the campaign, the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office is set to reach out to 300,000 residents at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2025.
The event will be hosted by Prosecutor Lucido and Dennis Liegghio, a nationally recognized suicide prevention advocate.
Liegghio’s nonprofit, KnowResolve, focuses on promoting mental health and preventing youth suicide through outreach, advocacy and education.
Anyone grieving the loss of a loved one to suicide or who may be contemplating self-harm is encouraged to participate in this event, according to the prosecutor’s office.
In addition, the prosecutor’s office is also encouraging gun owners to participate, to ensure they know the state’s gun storage laws and the consequences that can happen if they aren’t followed.
People are encouraged to register on the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office website to ensure they receive a call this evening.

“As your Macomb County Prosecutor, I believe keeping our children safe is a responsibility we all share,” said Lucido. “Safe gun storage is not only about following the law; it is about protecting children from accidents, preventing youth violence, and reducing the risk of suicide. This campaign is designed to ensure every family has the tools and knowledge they need to keep their loved ones safe. Together, we can build a stronger, safer community where every child has the chance to grow and thrive.”
