Sterling Heights officers to stand trial for chaotic K-9 arrest

Judge rules officers to face trial for 2024 arrest

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – A judge has ruled that two Sterling Heights police officers will stand trial for their role in a chaotic arrest involving a K-9.

It happened in February 2024. According to authorities, Gary Young was at his girlfriend’s house in Sterling Heights when he assaulted her and her daughter. Police were called and Young reportedly ran off.

Police said they attempted a traffic stop that resulted in a high-speed chase that ended when Young crashed near Gratiot Avenue and I-94.

The department shared police bodycam footage of when they caught up with Young. The footage shows an officer punching Young in the head repeatedly before a K-9 is brought in. Police said Young kicked an officer in the face. An officer responded with punches and a kick to Young’s head.

He reportedly was tased twice and was on the ground when the K-9 was deployed.

Police said Young had a blood alcohol level that was twice the legal limit.

The two officers, James Sribniak and Jack Currie, were charged in October 2024 with misconduct in office and felonious assault.

On Friday, Sept. 19, a judge ruled that there was enough evidence for the two to be bound over to stand trial for assault with intent to do great bodily harm and misconduct in office.

They will return to court Oct. 6.
